Why a Yearly Check Pays Off

A plan that worked well this year can change for next year. Doctors leave networks, drugs move to different tiers, and premiums and copays shift. Insurers announce those changes each fall, and they take effect on January 1.

Many people simply let their plan renew without looking. That is easy, but it can bring surprises at the pharmacy or at a specialist's office in the new year.

A yearly review takes about half an hour. We read the changes with you, check your doctors and medicines again and compare other plans we offer. It can all happen in Spanish.

Read Your Annual Notice of Change

Every Medicare Advantage and Part D plan sends its members an Annual Notice of Change by September 30. It lists changes to premiums, deductibles, copays, drug coverage and networks for the coming year.

  • Premium and deductible changes
  • Drugs added, removed or moved to a new tier
  • Changes to the doctor and pharmacy network
  • New or reduced extra benefits, such as dental or vision

Open Enrollment Dates

The fall Open Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7. During that time you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, change drug plans or move between Original Medicare and Part C. Changes take effect January 1.

From January 1 through March 31, people already in a Medicare Advantage plan can switch to another one or return to Original Medicare once. Moving, losing other coverage or qualifying for help with costs can create other enrollment opportunities.

What We Check With You

We start with your current medicines and doctors, because those can change too. Then we compare your current plan's new costs against other plans we offer, looking at premiums, copays, drug costs and networks.

If your current plan still fits best, we tell you so. There is no pressure to change anything. Those with a supplement can still review their drug plan each year.

Star Ratings and Plan Quality

Medicare rates each Part C and Part D plan from one to five stars based on member experience, customer service and how well the plan manages care. Ratings are updated every October, so a plan's score can rise or fall from one year to the next.

A plan rated five stars allows a special enrollment period from December 8 through November 30, so you can join it outside the usual fall dates. We show you each plan's current rating during the review, along with any complaints or warnings Medicare has posted.

Ratings are only one factor. A four-star plan that covers your medicines and doctors may serve you far better than a five-star plan that does not, so we weigh the score against your own needs.

Life Changes Mid-Year

Moving out of Plainfield, entering a nursing facility or qualifying for NJ FamilyCare can open a Special Enrollment Period. If your situation changes, reach out and we will check your options. Our savings programs guide covers help with costs.

Talk It Through With Us

Have your prescriptions and the names of your doctors handy. We set what you have now beside the plans we offer and point out where costs and access change.
